Project Fierce is a community advisory board (CAB) composed of young women of color with a 10-member capacity. Currently, new recruitment efforts are underway to fill a few available seats. We have been working towards identifying the social determinants of sexual and reproductive health in Los Angeles County (LA County) in order to better serve young women of color, who are disproportionately affected by STDs. We have distributed a survey to young women of color between the ages of 13-24 in LA County asking them about their experiences seeking sexual and reproductive health services, as well as, concerns and hesitations they have around this topic.
As a result, our CAB has identified three social determinants of health: access to education around STDs, access to health care services whether that entails stable insurance or reliable transportation, and social stigmas. Next, we will engage community stakeholders to discuss steps to address these determinants. By working collectively, we hope to create STD interventions with the direct feedback of the community.
