As you know, Let’s Talk Month emphasizes parent and youth communication about sex. We invite you to attend and strengthen your ability to engage parents and other adults around openly communicating about sexual and reproductive health (SRH). We are excited about our workshop trainers:
Laura Vargas – has over 25 years of experience in the fields of adult education, sexuality education and training. She has designed and implemented curricula on sexual and reproductive health, cultural journalism, and writing workshops in Mexico and Los Angeles. Currently, Laura is the Sr. health educator for the Promotoras Comunitarias Training Program at Planned Parenthood Los Angeles (PPLA) where she trains health promoters (Promotoras) and coordinates the Parent/Child Communication Program. PPLA Promotoras reach over 20,000 Latino parents every year in Los Angeles County.
Dara Griffin – a founding partner of Be Strong Families, Dara first attended a Love Is Not Enough Parent Cafe in 2008 and has been involved with Strengthening Families Illinois ever since. She is currently the Training Manager for Be Strong Families/Strengthening Families. Her areas of interest are parent engagement in schools, social marketing for positive change, and developing parent leaders. Among other projects in Los Angeles County she is currently working with pregnant and parenting youth in Compton through First 5 LA, Best Start Communities.
The workshop, co-facilitated by Rev. Michael Mata and Liza Bray, Director of Partners for Children South LA, will be an opportunity to:
- Explore knowledge and skills for engaging parents and community members around talking more openly, compassionately, and justly about SRH;
- Deepen understanding of positive youth development; and
- Learn more about resources available in the community that foster appropriate communication about SRH.
Please don’t forget to RSVP. We look forward to seeing you there!
